Do I need a mobile website?
Accessing the Internet using a mobile device is becoming more and more popular. Experts say that by 2014 mobile devices will be the most commonly used way to access the Internet – more common than using a browser on a desktop or laptop computer.
The short answer is yes, in today’s world a website that does not have a mobile friendly experience is only losing themselves visitors. There are many reasons why a standard desktop website just doesn’t cut it when it comes to mobile web browsing. Desktop sites that aren’t optimized for mobile can affect your rankings on search engines like Google. They also require pinching and zooming which is annoying on a small screen. Visitors that have a poor experience on mobile more likely to abandon your site and repeat their search, possibly going to a competitor.
What is a mobile website?
A mobile website is a separate version of your desktop website and it is designed to be used exclusively on smartphone devices. Typically, the mobile version includes a limited number of the many pages that are displayed on your desktop version. However, it will include a link to your full desktop website so that visitors have the option to find additional information.
When a smartphone user comes to your website, an “auto-detect” will recognize the device they’re using and then send that visitor to the mobile version (for example, “m.yourdomainname.com,” rather than “www.yourdomainname.com”). Since a mobile website is a condensed version of your main desktop site, it’s not very expensive to build for most businesses, and is a sufficient short-term solution if you don’t have the budget for a responsive design.
What is the difference between a mobile website and a mobile app?
A mobile website is a streamlined version of your website that is specifically designed and developed to be accessed on a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet. A mobile app is a program that users download to their mobile device from an app store. Unlike a mobile app which must be downloaded, your mobile website will display automatically when users visit your website from a mobile device.
How are mobile websites different than PC sites?Mobile websites are built to exploit the special characteristics of mobile phones and mobile users to provide the best possible experience to users. Besides adapting to the smaller screen of a mobile phone, they are also made easier to navigate using touch or a keypad and provide more direct access to the information that a customer is more likely to need while on the go.
I already own a domain. Can I use it with my mobile website?
The mobile website comes with a custom domain. If you already own an existing domain you can point it to your mobile site.
What are the benefits of a mobile website to my customers?Studies show that visitors who access a full website on their mobile phones complain about how much time and data is required to load the site and how hard it is to find the information they need. Most will abandon the site and look for a competitor with a more mobile-friendly website.
